The Manila City government is set to ban swimming in Manila Bay to protect people from increased pollution in the bay.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque recommended the ban. He said garbage and toxic chemicals in the bay could cause skin infections and other illnesses to swimmers.
Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim said he will order the installation of signages near the bay area to prevent people from swimming there. He said he will also order officials to open swimming pools in sports complexes in Manila to entice people to swim there.
* I've been to Manila Bay already and I could see that the bay is polluted, and I can't imagine why still lots of people would go there and swim and I even saw an old person fishing. But I haven't heard any incident of any swimmers got ill because of the pollution. And I understand why the Government is closing the Bay because they are concerned for the health of this people. Before, when I saw the picture of Manila Bay it was still so beautiful, unlike now. I think these people throwing their waste in the Bay are uneducated resulting to this pollution. Hopefully one day, it would return to the old Manila Bay that I saw in the old picture. *
