Sta Nina is the highly anticipated entry of filmmaker Emmanuel Quindo Palo in this years
8th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. With the stars like Coco Martin and Alesandra
de Rossi, considered as the best in the new breed of Filipino actors, many expect that
Sta Nina is really worth watching.
Sta Nina is a movie about people believing that the corpse of a very intact dead girl can
produce miracles.
Paulino Mungcal, with his co-workers, dug unexpectedly the remains of his two year
old daughter, whos body is well preserved in a lahar-filled quarry.
After discovering the well intact body of his daughter, Pol is now campaigning to have
his daughter recognized by the Catholic Church and make her a saint believing that the
corpse of his daughter can bring miracles and can cure the sick.
Coco Martin, despite of his busy schedule in his top rating TV drama Walang Hanggan
and filming movies, he insisted doing this indie film when he read the script even if it means
more of less sleeping hours.
The film even required Coco to carry a cross which is not new to him. It was said that Coco
does the carrying of the cross every Lenten Seasons in San Fernando, Pampanga.
And Sta Nina also mark the return of Coco doing indie films where his tremendous career
started and honed him to be one of the finest actor we have today.
One of the big scene in Sta Nina is when Coco did the crucifixion scene. It took them
hours to shoot in the streets of Pampanga under the extensive heat of the sun. Coco carried
the cross and and it took an hour to shoot the scene where Coco is already crucified.
The 8th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival will run from July 20 to 29 at the Cultural Center
of the Philippines.
