HISTORIC TOWN OF VIGAN CITY, ILOCOS SUR
and Its Beautiful Places

The Historic Town of Vigan is the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia, including the historical checkerboard street plan.

Vigan is located in the northeastern part of Luzon. It was founded as a trading town in 1572 by the Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo

Vigan differs from Spanish colonial towns in Latin America because its Latin tradition is tempered by strong Chinese, Ilocano and Filipino influences.

Vigan is so special, UNESCO deemed it a World Heritage Site and noted, “Vigan is an exceptionally intact and well-preserved example of a European trading town in East and Southeast Asia. The architecture is truly reflective of its roots in both materials and design, in its fusion of Asian building design and construction with European colonial architecture and planning.”

For travelers, it means only one thing—this could be a romantic adventure. And although the Philippines has many period-haciendas and mansions, Vigan has an entire district of them. It’s like gallivanting through time.

Calle Crisologo / Mestizo District
One should take a walk at the amber-colored streets of Mestizo District, particularly Calle Crisologo and feel the melancholic ambiance of the night.

Listen to the occasional clacking of a late night calesa congruent with the clattering of footsteps from couple of lovebirds who, like you, enjoy the stillness of the surrounding. Gape at every Spanish era wooden mansions, timeworn and in beautiful decay.

Plaza Burgos
Named after Jose P. Burgos, the Catholic priest who fought for church reform during the Spanish occupation of the Philippines. He was executed in Bagumbayan (Luneta or Rizal Park) in Manila along with two other clergies, Gomez and Zamora, forming the reformists trio - GOMBURZA

St. Augustine Church commony known as Bantay Church.

Plaza Salcedo is the main and biggest and central plaza in the heritage village. It has a huge pool or lagoon where the musical dancing fountain is held every night. Several benches surround the pool, shaded with big trees. The plaza has a 17th century monument of Juan de Salcedo and it is also the place where Gabriela Silang (a resistance leader) was executed by public hanging in 1763.

Vigan City is known for Burnay Jar  an earthenware jar crafted by a potter’s hands with the aid of a potter’s wheel. It uses fine sand (anay) as a tempering material and fired at a high temperature in a huge brick-and-clay ground kiln that makes it is harder and more durable than other terra cotta.
