Every April 27, the historic battle of Mactan between the forces of Lapu-lapu and Ferdinand Magellan is reenacted.

The Battle of Mactan is among the significant events in Philippine history and one of the first recorded acts by Filipinos asserting their sovereignty against foreign intrusion.

Starting in 2012, the Kadaugan sa Mactan has become a celebration of the culture and history of Lapu-lapu City, which is part of Metropolitan Cebu.

Also known as Bahug-bahug sa Mactan, the event is a weeklong commemoration of the historic battle between Ferdinand Magellan and Mactan chieftain Lapu-lapu, with the latter vanquishing the explorer.

The festival features several exciting activities, street parties, and events. This year’s Kadaugan (2014) will be celebrated for three days, from April 25 to 27, to accommodate more activities.

Activity Highlights on April 27, 2014: (schedule may change without prior notice)

• 07:00am-08:00am – Holy Mass at Mactan Liberty Shrine.
• 08:00am-09:00am – Flag raising, flower offering, military honors (21-gun salute) Philippine Air Force at the Mactan Liberty Shrine.
• 09:00am-10:00am – Kadaugan sa Mactan (The Battle of Mactan reenactment).
• 02:00pm-04:00am – Kadaugan Street Party at Lapu-lapu City Hall Compound and ML Quezon Highway.

TRIVIA: Did you know that the “Kadaugan sa Mactan” usually gets celebrities or popular actors to play the role of Lapu-lapu, Bulakna (Lapu-lapu’s wife), and Magellan? In 2008, the battle was reenacted by Manny Pacquiao as Lapu-lapu, Jinkee Pacquiao as Bulakna, and Dennis Trillo as Magellan.
