One way of growing your Tagalog vocabulary faster is to take two words at once and learn

both of them simultaneously. This is accomplished by using word pairs that contrast with

each other in meanings. So here I have listed several sets of Tagalog words that have

opposite meanings.Then I will use each of the contrasting words in a simple sentence.

  

  

buhay - alive
Mananatiling buhay sa aking ala-ala ang ating maliligayang araw.

Our happy days will remain alive in my memory.


patay - dead
Meron daw patay na daga sa kisame ng iyong silid.

They say there is a dead rat on the ceiling of your room.

bata - young
Marami na tayong batang kasapi sa ating samahan.

We already have a lot of young members in our association.


 

matanda - old
Ang punong ito ay kasing tanda ng kastilyo.

This tree is as old as the castle.

bago - new

Malapit na naman ang bagong taon.

The New Year is again getting near.


luma - old
Ipinagbili ng katulong ang mga lumang diyaryo.

The maid sold the old newspapers.

babae - female
Ang silid na ito ay para sa mga babae lamang.

This room is for females only.


lalaki - male

Ang mga lalaking kasama sa palatuntunan ay pinakikiusapan na

katotohanan - truth
Ang katotohanan ay mahirap pasubalian.

It is very difficult to disprove the truth.


kasinungalingan - falsehood
Ang kasinungalingan sa malao't madali ay mabubunyag din.

makinis - smooth
Makinis ang ibabaw ng mesa.

The top of the table is smooth.

 

magaspang - rough
Kailangan ko ng magaspang na papel de liha.

I need rough sandpaper.

harap - front
Ang dalaga ay madalas magsuklay sa harap ng salamin.

The lady often combs her hair in front of the mirror.


likod - back
Doon tayo magkita sa likod ng simbahan.

Let's see each other at the back of the church.

loob - inside
Ang loob ng bahay ay napakalinis.

The inside of the house is really clean.


labas - outside
Halika at samahan mo ako sa labas.

Come and join me outside.

matigas - hard
Ang narra ay isang matigas na kahoy.

Narra is a hard wood.


malambot - soft
Ang unan ng sanggol ay dapat na malambot.

The baby's pillow should be soft.

bukas - open
Laging bukas ang aming tahanan para sa inyo.

Our house is always open for you.


closed - sarado
Sarado ang mga tanggapan tuwing Linggo.

The offices are closed every Sunday.

tama - correct
Tama ang sinabi mo.

What you said is correct.


mali - wrong
Konti lamang ang maling sagot ko sa pagsusulit.

bukas - tomorrow
Sana ay maging maganda ang panahon bukas.

The road going up the mountain is steep.

pababa - going down
Pababa na ang galaw ng presyo ng langis sa pamilihan.

The movement of the oil price in the market is going down.

basa - wet

Magaling na panglinis sa makintab na gamit ang basang basahan.
