수업시간에 공부하는 책도 중요하지만,

필리핀 생활에서 사용되는 영수증이나 광고전단 등을 통해

실제 영어표현이 어떻게 쓰이고, 어떻게 작성해야 하는지 알아야 한다.

책에서는 이런 내용이 별로 없기 때문에, 책으로만 공부해서는 한계가 있다.

 

필리핀 어학연수는 학원안에서만 하는 것이 다가 아니라고 생각한다.

학원 밖에 나와서 영어를 실생활에서 사용해봐야 진짜 머리에 각인되기 때문이다.

물건을 사거나, 음식을 주문할때 정확하게 자신의 need를 말할 수 있어야 한다.

맨날 졸리비 같은 페스트푸드점에서 세트메뉴만 먹을 수는 없지 않은가?

 

 

위 사진은 Buto't Balat 이라는 시푸드 음식점의 영수증이다.

음식을 주문하고나서, 계산할때 웨이터가 갖고 온다. 물론 작성은 그들이 해준다.

우리 나라 영수증과 다른 점은 12% VAT가 있다는 것이다. 우리나라는 금액에 포함되지만 이곳은 따로 표시된다.

영수증 내용을 꼼꼼히 살펴보자. 무엇이 한국과 다른지 찾아보고,

어떻게 영어로 표현되어 있는지를 확인해보는 것 자체가 공부에 도움이 될 것이다.

 

 

위 사진은 현지 호텔에서 제공하는 서비스 패키지에 대한 홍보전단이다.

호텔에 묵으려고 들어갔더니, 룸안에 비치되어 있어서 이쁘게 모아서 사진을 찍어보았다.

마사지를 스파 서비스라고 표기해놓은 것을 볼 수 있다.

우리가 흔히 쓰는 스파와 이들이 사용하는 스파는 의미가 약간 다르다.

 

우리는 찜짐방처럼 목욕탕을 갖고 있는 서비스를 스파라고 하지만

이들은 마사지와 스크럽을 합쳐서 스파라고 하더라. 스크럽은 때미는 것이다.

시간은 hr로 표시되고, 분은 min으로 표시되고, 가격은 prize가 아니라 amount를 사용하고 있다.

보통 한국인들은 가격하면 prize로 알것이나, 실제 amount를 사용한다는 차이를 알 수 있다.

 

또한 우리는 보통 from A to B로 알고 있는 숙어의 경우.

from을 잘 사용하지 않는다는 것이다. 위에서 오른쪽, 공항에서 호텔까지 오는 차량 서비스를 보자.

Airport to Hotel Transfer 라는 문장이 있다. 공항에서 호텔까지 운송을 말하는 것이다.

 

실제 대화에서 3교시-4교시라는 표현이 3 to 4 class 라고 하더라.

물론 from을 사용하는게 맞지만, 사용하지 않아도 된다는 것을 알 수 있다.

이러한 것들은 책에 안나온다. 따라서 책으로만 공부해서는 이런 모든 것을 알 수 없으므로

책을 기본으로 하되, 학원밖에 나와서 실생활에서 어떻게 사용되는지 유심히 살펴볼 필요가 있다.
