Respect and formality in the Tagalog language are indicated through the use of 
certain words or by the preference of a certain word over another. In the first case, 
words of respect are inserted in appropriate places in the sentence to show respect
for the person or persons being addressed. In the second case, normal words are 
replaced with alternative words that indicate respect for the person or persons addressed. 
 
 
Respect to the person or persons being talked to is shown in Tagalog by using 
the alternative translations for the words yes and no in English. For example, instead 
of saying Oo which means yes in English, you use the words Oho or Opo when 
talking with older persons or persons who have authority like the teacher or the 
mayor or the priest. Instead of saying Hindi which means No in English, you use the
alternative Hindi ho or Hindi po. Furthermore, respect and formality are added to the meaning of the Tagalog sentence 
by inserting the words Ho or Po in appropriate places inside the sentence. Ho and Po
are both expressions of respect although Ho is used in more informal situations while 
Po is reserved for more formal circumstances. The shift in the mood of the sentence is accompanied by the change in the form 
of the pronouns used. This shift is mostly made on the second person pronoun in
the singular form. For example, the pronoun iyo is changed to inyo, mo is changed 
to ninyo and ka is changed to kayo. In the following examples, an English sentence is presented and then followed by 
three versions in Tagalog corresponding to informal and non-respectful, informal 
and respectful, and last one formal and respectful.
  
 
 
 
Good morning. Magandang umaga. Magandang umaga ho. Magandang umaga po. Here is the entrance. Dito ang pasukan. Dito ho ang pasukan. Dito po ang pasukan. The children have gone home. Umuwi na ang mga bata. Umuwi na ho ang mga bata. Umuwi na po ang mga bata. He doesn't want to speak with anyone. Ayaw niyang makipag-usap kahit kanino. Ayaw ho niyang makipag-usap kahit kanino. 
Ayaw po niyang makipag-usap kahit kanino. Our office is now open for new proposals. Bukas na ang aming tanggapan sa mga bagong panukala. Bukas na ho ang aming tanggapan sa mga bagong panukala. Bukas na po ang aming tanggapan sa mga bagong panukala. I'm getting off here. Dito na ako bababa. Dito na ho ako bababa. Dito na po ako bababa. She is asking for more help. Humihingi siya ng dagdag na tulong. Humihingi ho siya ng dagdag na tulong.
Humihingi po siya ng dagdag na tulong. A lot of people are waiting outside. Maraming tao ang naghihintay sa labas. Marami hong tao ang naghihintay sa labas. 
Marami pong tao ang naghihintay sa labas. Leave your things here. Iwanan mo ang mga gamit mo dito. Iwanan ho ninyo ang mga gamit ninyo dito. 
Iwanan po ninyo ang mga gamit ninyo dito. The work you have requested has been done. Tapos na ang ipinagawa mo. Tapos na ho ang ipinagawa ninyo. 
Tapos na po ang ipinagawa ninyo. Show your papers to the lawyer. Ipakita mo ang papeles mo sa abugado.
Ipakita ho ninyo ang papeles ninyo sa abugado.
Ipakita po ninyo ang papeles ninyo sa abugado.

So there you have it, those are the ways by which respect and formality are
indicated in the Tagalog sentences. This is an important point to consider and 
give proper attention to if you want to gain the goodwill of the people you are talking with.
Filipino words of respect are taught in the elementary and secondary schools and using
