The Breakup Playlist starts with the actual breakup scene and then it flashbacks to the time Gino (Piolo Pascual) and Trixie (Sarah Geronimo) first met and fell in love. The movie then moves back and forth to trace the reason behind the breakup and what happened to them after the breakup. It is an interesting approach for a mainstream romantic drama but is it just a stylish way telling a familiar story but nothing more?

Law student Trixie meets band vocalist Gino in a summer music camp. Trixie impresses Gino with her voice and musicality and he offers her to join the band he is forming. At first Trixie declines as this could hinder her studies but she eventually gives in as music is her true passion. The band becomes successful but a creative and ego clash pushes them apart. Years after the breakup, Trixie got an offer to do a reunion project with her old band. In need of money, Trixie accepts even if she has to deal again with the man who broke her heart.

The Breakup Playlist is not a "kilig" movie at all as it does not have the usual romcom tropes like a meet cute scene or a "falling in love montage" with the movie's theme song playing in the background. The development of Trixie and Gino's relationship is more lowkey and straight to the point. The movie focuses more on building up the tension that will eventually cause the breakup. The depiction of a deteriorating relationship due to insecurities and pent-up grievances was presented in such an honest way.

While Piolo Pascual did a good job overall, it was really Sarah Geronimo who shined the most. Trixie is quite different from Geronimo's past roles as the character is not the endearing and funny lovestruck gal the actress is known for. Trixie is more mature and complex. Geronimo portrayed the struggles of a broken person so effectively. Her dramatic scenes soared not because of the melodramatic lines but because she captured the soul of the character, so when Trixie blurted out the pain she has gone through it will give a pinch in the heart.

The storytelling device of mixing flashbacks and flash-forwards started out good and engrossing however it struggled to come up with a more satisfying conclusion. The main conflict was resolved way too easy and felt like it was unearned. I'm not totally against with how the movie left their characters in the end but I felt like it left a few questions unanswered.

Despite an uneven end, The Breakup Playlist is still one of the most interesting mainstream movies I have seen in awhile.
