Bogo City, Cebu
The Beautiful Capitancillo Islet
in Bogo City, Cebu
Capitancillo Island is an isolated six-hectare
coralline islet between Cebu and
Leyte that falls within the jurisdiction of Bogo City.
At the center of the island is a solar-powered
lighthouse which sits among the remains
of an old structure which was used as a
reserve barracks for American soldiers during
World War II. Some say the island got its name
from an American Navy captain whose vessel
was beached here. There is also the legend
about an ill-fated galleon whose captain,
Capitan Basillo, insulted a chieftain in Mactan.
While Basillo was fleeing Mactan,
the chieftain pursued him and put a spell on
his galleon which turned into this islet.
It is popular for diving and snorkeling as it has
a reef and has long been declared a
marine sanctuary. Capitancillo is a 30-minute
boat ride from Bogo in mainland Cebu.
Spending time on this popular tourist destination
will give you a chance to taste and discover
the beauty of the Philippine islands.
