Mamang Sorbetero (Mister Ice-Cream Man) is the title of a popular Tagalog song in the Philippines. Filipinos jokingly refer to homemade ice cream sold cheaply from street carts as "dirty ice cream." Up until recently, sorbetes was generally considered inferior to ice cream made by the large companies Magnolia and Selecta. But with increasing pride in local Filipino artifacts, even the company Selecta is now marketing a line called Sorbetes.
Sorbetes is traditionally made from carabao milk and is served as small scoops (really small in comparison to American portions) on small sugar cones. Filipinos even serve ice cream inside bread pieces that look like miniature hamburger buns! Favorite ice cream flavors in the Phlippines include ube (purple yam), mango, macapuno (young coconut) and keso (cheese). The Western flavors vanilla, chocolate, mocha and strawberry are also popular.
TAGALOG LYRICS
Mamang sorbetero, anong ngalan mo?
Tinda mong ice cream, gustong-gusto ko
Init ng buhay, pinapawi mo
Sama ng loob, nalilimutan ko
CHORUS:
Mamang sorbetero, tayo'y sumayaw
Kalembang mong hawak, muling ikaway
Batang munti, sa 'yo'y naghihintay
Bigyang ligaya ngayong tag-araw
Masdan ang ulap sa himpapawid
Korteng sorbetes sa pisngi ng langit
Mata ng dalaga'y nananaginip
Mayro'ng sikretong nasasaisip
[Repeat CHORUS]
Mainit na labi, nagbabagang mata
Sunog na pag-ibig, parang awa mo na
Mamang sorbetero, o, nasaan ka
Init ng buhay, pawiin mo na...
La la la la la...
